As the oldest city in Western Europe Cadiz, Spain is one of my favourite ports to visit as itβs walking distance from the cruise ship where you are able to wander the streets of the beautiful city. Visitors are able to wander the streets admiring the beautiful architecture whilst also browsing some of the shops or even stop for a coffee in one of the many places available. The streets of Cadiz are very easy to get lost in but it is a city that can be easily explored in one day.
One of the main attractions in Cadiz is Cadiz Cathedral which is a beautiful 18th century cathedral which features Baroque and Neoclassical architecture. As you look over the city of Cadiz you are able to see the Cathedral with its towers and dome, this is also visible from various parts of the city. A Catholic cathedral which is known as Cathedral of the Holy Cross over the Waters. If you wish to enjoy a panoramic view over the city then you are able to enjoy views of the city from up one of the towers known as Levante Tower.

As the home to the Spanish Navy, Cadiz has more than 100 watchtowers which include the iconic Torre Tavira. Torre Tavira was known as the official watchtower for the port of Cadiz in the 18th century as the highest point in the city. Located in the old quarter of the city, visitors are able to experience panoramic views of the city, two exhibition rooms as well as camera obscurer who h projects a real time moving image of what is happening outside.
As you are wandering the streets of Cadiz you are likely to find yourself in the El Populo neighbourhood which is the oldest neighbourhood in the city with a history that spans over 3,000 years. This neighbourhood can be found at the entrance to Old Town between the City Hall as well as the Cathedral.

If you have some free time make sure to visit the Mercado which has over 100 stalls, you will see many of the locals shopping for vegetables, cheese, meat as well as fish.
There is the option to do a hop on hop off bus in Cadiz which you can purchase tickets close to the ship.
If you have visited Cadiz before and are looking to do something different I would also recommend visiting Seville which is Iβve done on a previous port stop at Cadiz. Seville is located approximately 90 minutes away from Cadiz, some cruise lines offer shore excursions to Seville. Iβve previously been onboard P&O where I did an excursion which was Seville on your own.
A post about Seville will be coming soon.
